Body fluid ionic content of fishes varies with ambient. Variations in the plasmatic ionic concentration have also been related with sex or maturation cycle, once that reproduction modifies metabolic processes. In fishes, the gallbladder is an important osmoregulatory organ. So, the present work has been focused on the relation of plasmatic and biliar electrolytes with sex and maturation cycle, of the teleost fish Prochilodus scrofa at the resting and mature stages of gonadal cycle. The animals (28 males and 30 females) were collected at Cachoeira de Emas (Pirassununga, São Paulo) and they were fasted for three days before the experiments. Deteminations of Na+, K+, Mg++, and Ca++ were made by spectophotometry and Cl- by microtitulation. Comparisons of ionic... |

The Salado River is an important watercourse in northern Pampean region of Argentina which includes several lakes in the upper part of its basin. This upper part shows lesser fish species richness than the lower section of the river. In this paper, an analysis of community structure of secondary and tertiary consumers and its autecology are presented. Among the 14 fish species recorded, 3 were mainly or totally piscivorous as adults. They constituted 11.4% of the numeric abundance and 10.8% of the biomass. Their numeric abundance was 89% (Oligosarcus jenynsii), 11% (Rhamdia sapo), and 0.5% (Hoplias malabaricus malabaricus), and their relative biomass was 61%, 33%, and 6%, respectively. Length/weight ratio, condition factor, and cephalic index indicate that... |

Fish of the family Prochilodontidae are considered one of the most important components of commercial and subsistence fishery in freshwater environments in South America. This family consists of 21 species and three genera. In the present study, the karyotypes of Prochilodus mariae, Semaprochilodus kneri, and S. laticeps from Caicara del Orinoco, Bolivar State, Venezuela were studied. The species P. mariae, S. kneri and S. laticeps exhibited 2n=54 chromosomes (40 metacentric and 14 submetacentric), a single chromosome pair with nucleolus organizer regions, and a large amount of heterochromatin found at centromeric and pericentromeric positions in almost all chromosomes. The P. mariae specimens studied displayed 0 to 3 supernumerary microchromosomes. The... |

A new characid species, Astyanax elachylepis, is described from the rio Tocantins drainage. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by possessing 48-53 perforated scales along the lateral line, a large caudal-peduncle spot, the presence of bony hooks on dorsal, anal, pelvic, and pectoral fins of males, one or two vertically-elongated humeral spots, one maxillary tooth, and 22-27 branched anal-fin rays. |

The reproductive biology of the piau-jejo Leporinus taeniatus Lütken, 1875, an endemic species from the São Francisco River basin, was studied by using macroscopical and histological techniques. A total of 121 males and 94 females were captured quarterly, between March 2002 and February 2003 in the Juramento Reservoir. Females were larger than males, indicating sexual dimorphism. Stages of gonadal maturation were defined from histological analyses and gonadosomatic index. Peaks of maturing/mature and spawned/spermiated fishes has occurred in period December-February. L. taeniatus presented total spawning and group-synchronic development of the oocytes. The gonadosomatic index accompanied gonad maturation in both sexes, and coelomic fat presented lower... |

Two new species of Hyphessobrycon are described from the upper rio Tapajós basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is distinguished from its congeners by the combination of a conspicuous longitudinal broad black band beginning on the posterior margin of orbit and reaching the tip of middle caudal fin rays, a distinct vertically elongate humeral spot, and 16 to 18 branched anal-fin rays. Hyphessobrycon notidanos is distinguished from its congeners by the combination of an elongate dorsal fin in mature males, a vertically elongate humeral spot, 2-4 maxillary teeth, iii,8 dorsal-fin rays, and 16 to 21 branched anal-fin rays. |

The objective of this work was to study the morphologic development and the swimming and feeding behaviors of piracanjuba larvae, Brycon orbignyanus Valenciennes (1849) (Characiformes, Characidae, Bryconinae), during the period from zero to 172 hours after hatching (standard length = 3.62 - 11.94 mm). The morphological analyses were accomplished by using a trinocular stereo microscope, while the behavioral analyses were performed through periodic observations. In 28 hours after hatching, the larvae (standard length = 6.25 ± 0.13 mm) showed the following structural and behavioral characteristics that made them become active predators able to overcome a larval critical phase, the beginning of exogenous feeding: presence of pigmented eyes, terminal and wide... |

The endangered bocachico Prochilodus magdalenae is a native freshwater fish of Colombia, the most captured species locally and one of the most important species for ex-situ conservation (germplasm banks). The aim of this study was to examine the effect of three concentrations of Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) (5%, 10%, 15%) and three of glucose (305, 333, 361 mM) in the extender on spermatic DNA fragmentation (F-DNA) (by Halomax®, Chromatin dispersion) and membrane damage (D-Me) (by eosin-nigrosin staining). After assessment of sperm quality by computer analysis of motility, one part of semen from males was diluted separately with three parts of extender and filled into 0.5 ml straws. Freezing was carried out in liquid nitrogen vapor dry shipper for 30 minutes... |

Hyphessobrycon uaiso is described from the upper rio Paraná basin, rio Grande drainage, Minas Gerais State. The new species differs from its congeners by the short anal fin with 12-17 branched rays, and dorsal fin with ii,7-8 rays. Besides, it can be distinguished by the presence of i,5-6 pelvic fin rays, and by the coloration of the eyes (in life), slightly blue on the lower half and blackish on the upper half. New records of Hyphessobryconare recognized for the upper rio Paraná basin: H. eilyos Lima & Moreira, H. guarani Mahnert & Géry, and H. herbertaxelrodi Géry. The knowledge status about the ichthyofauna from the upper rio Paraná basin and comments about the type material of some species of Hyphessobrycon are briefly discussed. |
